Sallie Graves came to my office one day wanting a cover design for a poetry book she was publishing. After brainstorming and expanding on her original idea, we came up with the idea of having a big vibrant heart with a rose blooming out of is, against a background of faded wallpaper with "broken hearts." While doing color pencil sketches of broken hearts for the wallpaper, I noticed how like people's faces the sides of the heart looked like, and tried a version of the broken heart as an unhappy -looking or arguing couple.
